Rotational management

This is the reason MUTU exists. We have done the research. We have the data. Studies show that whether you hit your head in a fall or are struck by falling debris, it’s most often an angled impact. This creates rotational motion, and the brain is very sensitive to this. So, this part is easy: just be sure to pick a helmet that’s equipped with a MUTU® safety system, which is intended to help reduce rotational forces to the head during angled impacts. 

Comfort and fit

This is the most important one to get right. You’ll likely be wearing the helmet for long periods of time, so making sure it’s comfortable will ensure that you keep it on. Also, if the helmet doesn’t fit properly, your protection and safety can be compromised. When trying to find the correct helmet model and size, it’s important to consider everything from the overall helmet shape to its retention systems and straps. The first thing you need to know is your head circumference. You can find this by wrapping a flexible tape measure around your head about 2cm above your eyebrows. Or you can wrap a string around your head and measure it with a yardstick. Once you have the right size, be sure to properly adjust the chin straps and buckle, along with the adjustment dial if it has one.  

Type of climbing

From mountaineering to ice climbing to indoor workouts at the gym, there are lots of different ways to climb. Choose a helmet that’s best suited to the climate, terrain and needs of your climbing style. For example, if you’re mountaineering in alpine conditions, it’s wise to choose a bright color so climbing partners can easily spot you during rain or snowstorms. If you’re ice climbing, you’ll likely need less ventilation because cooling is less of a factor and you don’t want open vents that overhead ice can fall through. If you’re doing more sport climbing in warm weather, look for more ventilation to prevent overheating. 

Weight

Climbing helmets come in a wide variety of weights. If you’re targeting climbs that require long hikes on the approach, or doing multi-pitch days in warm weather, you may want to look at lighter weight models. Performance-oriented helmets constructed with a foam EPS layer covered by a hard outer shell are typically lighter weight and better ventilated than traditional hardshell climbing helmets. 

Safety certifications

Most climbing helmets available to consumers are required to meet certain safety requirements, but it’s best to double-check that it’s up to date with the latest regulations in your country. A common standard is EN 12492, which tests for multiple impacts (rather than single-impact testing that’s more common in bike helmets).

There are plenty of great choices of climbing helmets available today. Be sure to choose one from a brand you know and trust, with a color and style that you’ll enjoy wearing.
