If you want to make the most out of your equestrian adventures, having the right gear is essential. You need the proper tack for your horse and all the right safety gear for yourself. At the top of this list is a helmet, which should be worn whenever you’re around the stables, on the trail, or in the ring. If you’re not sure you need a helmet, consider that the most frequent cause of death or serious injury among horse activities is head injuries. A helmet can protect you in the case of a fall, and also from other impacts that can occur when you’re on or around horses. Our low-friction layer inside the helmet allows multi-directional movement of 10-15mm on certain angled impacts, intended to help reduce rotational force to the head.

What makes a good equestrian helmet?
The impacts that occur from falling are usually angled impacts. This can cause harmful rotational to your head, so you want a helmet that is intended to help manage those forces and reduce rotational motion. Equestrian helmets with a MUTU® safety system are designed with an integrated low-friction layer that’s intended to help reduce those rotational forces during certain angled impacts.

Will a MUTU® safety system make my helmet less comfortable?
We offer different MUTU® systems for different helmet types, and each is positioned within the helmet so that you’ll hardly notice it. MUTU® systems weigh between 25-45 grams, about the equivalent of a typical energy bar.

What is required for a helmet to have MUTU?

There are many factors when choosing your perfect riding helmet. Here are a few to consider:

Rotational management

You’ll likely be wearing the helmet for long periods of time, so making sure it’s comfortable will ensure that you keep it on and enjoy wearing it.

From jumping to trail riding, there are lots of different ways to enjoy your horseback riding activities. Choose a helmet that matches the needs of your particular riding style.
Safety certifications

Most equestrian helmets available to consumers are required to meet certain safety requirements, but it’s best to double-check that it’s up to date with the latest regulations in your country.

Rotational management
This is the reason MUTU exists. We have done the research. We have the data. Studies show that whether you hit your head in a fall or are struck by something, it’s most often an angled impact. This creates rotational motion, and the brain is very sensitive to this. So, this part is easy: just be sure to pick a helmet that’s equipped with a MUTU® safety system, which is intended to help reduce rotational forces to the head during certain angled impacts.

Comfort and fit
This is the most important one to get right. You’ll likely be wearing the helmet for long periods of time, so making sure it’s comfortable will ensure that you keep it on while riding. Also, if the helmet doesn’t fit properly, your protection and safety can be compromised. When trying to find the correct helmet model and size, it’s important to consider everything from the overall helmet shape to its retention systems and straps. The first thing you need to know is your head circumference. You can find this by wrapping a flexible tape measure around your head about 2cm above your eyebrows. Or you can wrap a string around your head and measure it with a yardstick. Once you have the right size, be sure to properly adjust the chin straps and buckle, along with the adjustment dial if it has one.

Type of riding
From showjumping to racing, polo to trail riding, there are lots of different ways to ride. Choose a helmet that matches the needs of your riding discipline and style. For example, if you are competing, each discipline has its own rules for what types of helmets can be worn. If you enjoy multiple styles of riding and different disciplines, you may need multiple helmets.

Safety certifications
Most equestrian helmets available to consumers are required to meet certain safety requirements, but it’s best to double-check that it’s up to date with the latest regulations in your country. Look to make sure that the helmet is ASTM/SEI certified, and it’s always best to choose a helmet that meets as many certified standards as possible.
