The founders of MUTU have spent decades studying the relationship between brain injuries and helmet construction. Years of research and testing occurred before the first helmet with a MUTU® safety system (an equestrian helmet) came to life in 2007. Today you can find MUTU® safety systems in helmets from most major helmet manufacturers and for main activities including cycling, snow sports, motorsports, team sports and even construction. MUTU® safety systems are the result of extensive research and testing, both internally and from independent third-party sources.
Hans von Holst is a Swedish neurosurgeon and professor emeritus who has dedicated his professional life to studying head injuries. In 1996, tired of seeing people hospitalized with brain injuries that had occurred in falls– even though they had been wearing helmets– he began examining how helmets were designed. His research led him to understand that most helmets available offered insufficient protection.
Hans partnered with engineer Peter Halldin, a young researcher at the Swedish Royal Institute (KTH), to perform extensive research with the goal of understanding how and why head and neck injuries occur even when someone is wearing a helmet.
